Parents need to be informed and involved. I have learned that often it is not that parents do not want to help, but that they do not know how. This parent presentation provides students with some simple tips for how to support reading development at home.

This year I began allotting 20 minutes of my language arts block to shared reading. I tried to be very intentional about the books I chose, making sure to find high quality literature with diverse protagonists. Some of these titles included:

If I am unsure of the effectiveness of a particular intervention, I can create an action research project to track its potential usefulness. This is one such research project which helped me find a fun, effective fluency intervention.

One of the best ways to take action to is take on leadership roles and responsibilities. As I begin at a new elementary school this fall, I hope to establish myself as a collaborative, active leader with a focus on creating a literacy right environment.
